Infinite scroll was engineered to feel effortless so you never stop moving. Most screen time tools respond with punishment: blocking apps, showing guilt-inducing warnings, and locking you out. Fluid Friction starts from a different premise: change how scrolling feels.
On Android the app adds resistance to the scroll gesture itself across 12 social media apps including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, and X. As you drag, a wave rises from the bottom of the screen with real-time physics: momentum, buoyancy, and spring-damper mechanics that make it feel like actual liquid. Past a threshold you set, a volumetric bubble separates from the wave and rises off the screen, and only then is the scroll passed through. A fast flick bursts the bubble and does not count. Every scroll becomes a conscious choice.
iOS does not allow one app to draw over another, so the iPhone version puts the same physics inside its own dedicated social browser and pairs it with native app and website shielding built on Apple's Screen Time controls.
Friction is the entry point, and underneath sits a complete digital wellness system: 9 AI coach personalities (from Gentle Guide to Sarcastic Bestie) powered by on-device Gemini Nano, behavioral pattern detection that identifies vulnerability windows and doom-scroll triggers, feature-level blocking that targets Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts while keeping DMs and search friction-free, Smart Friction scheduling with four presets that adapt throughout the day, NFC tags for physical focus rituals, spatial profiles that adjust based on your Wi-Fi zone, a friends leaderboard with health scores, 8 ranked tiers with daily quests, guided breathing and meditation, a Pomodoro timer, and a habit tracker.
Set Fluid Friction as your default Android launcher and it becomes Fluid OS: a full home screen with a pegboard dashboard, 39 snap-to-grid widget types, an app drawer with search and folders, and 100 dynamic app icons that match your selected theme.
92 collectible themes rendered by 48 custom effect engines let you personalize how friction looks and feels. Living themes like Mycelium, Kraken, and Phoenix feel organic and alive, while the Discography collection recreates abstract album art. Three themes are free, and Fluid Pro, an optional subscription, unlocks the rest along with dark mode and unlimited cloud AI reports.
Fluid Friction was built by Manfred and Gustav Mjengwa, twin brothers who needed this app themselves. Over 1,100 Kotlin files on Android and a native Swift app on iPhone. No venture funding, no growth hacks, and every functional tool free forever.
