Manfred and Gustav say Hello!

“Infinite scroll, autoplay, and pull-to-refresh are documented 'attention-capture' designs, built to hold you past the point you meant to stop.”

Defines how endless feeds deliberately remove stopping cues so the interface captures attention against the user's own intention.

“Across 1,315 people and 67,762 check-ins, the more someone scrolled mindlessly, passively and without a goal, the worse they tended to feel.”

Preregistered experience-sampling study showing passive, goal-less scrolling directly predicts guilt and daily wellbeing drops.

“The European Parliament named infinite scroll and default autoplay 'addictive design,' and urged the EU to assess banning them.”

Official consumer-protection resolution identifying endless feeds and autoplay as the primary digital mechanisms hijacking human attention.

“Endless-scroll sessions often end not because you are finished, but because something interrupts you; the feed removes the natural stopping cue.”

Field study tracking real-world infinite scroll loops found users rarely stop by choice without a physical or external interruption.

“Phones are built like slot machines: every swipe pulls a lever on an intermittent reward, so it is the delivery, not the content, that hooks you.”

Former Google design ethicist explaining how variable-reward swiping bypasses conscious choice and keeps the thumb moving on autopilot.

“The endless feed runs on the same intermittent-reward design as a slot machine: the next swipe might be great, so you keep pulling.”

Peer-reviewed analysis of social feed mechanics showing how zero-friction swiping pairs with unpredictable rewards to drive compulsive loops.
